Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day: November 2012

Geranium sanguineum ‘Striatum’

I’ve never taken pictures of my garden in November before. And I was pretty sure I won’t have a lot to show for this bloom day, maybe just some of common heathers. You can never know what to expect from November in Lithuania. Sometimes it’s pretty mild and rainy, sometimes with piles of snow. We’ve got a little bit of everything this year. There were several hard frosts, a week of snow and two weeks of heavy rain. I just can’t believe that some plants are still blooming! There are just some single blooms of course, but it is nice to know that garden is not as empty as I expected.

Calluna vulgaris

Common heather (Calluna vulgaris) is a reliable autumn plant. It is not afraid of frost or snow and looks nice through the winter.  I have several of them near my terrace to bring some colors during the gloomiest time of the season. Heathers’ colors in November are not as bright as they were in October, but still nice. But I really don’t know how to take nice pictures of them. Tried several times but pictures look noisy and chaotic. Any advice how to take pictures of this sort of plant?

Lobularia maritima

Sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) lives its own life in my garden freely reseeding where it wants. It seems that it really likes company of common heather. I enjoy a duet of white sweet alyssum and white heather very much.  Although most of the blooms of alyssum are already gone, some of these small cute flowers still bloom despite the frost and snow.

Rosa ‘Marie Pavic’

Roses are still blooming too. In Octobers GBBD I’ve posted a photo of a polyantha rose ‘Marie Pavic’ in the background of lilac flowers of aster pyranaeus ‘Lutetia’. Nice daisy type flowers of aster changed into the white fluffy seed heads, but the rose is still blooming. Just a small background change during a month!

Rosa ‘Marie Pavic’

I did not expect much of a late aster ‘Lady in Black’ (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum), especially after the frost and snow. Flowers of another aster (Symphiotrichum dumosum) became a brown mess after the first frost however ‘Lady in Black’ is blooming. I can not expect this aster to become a white cloud of flower as I see on the pictures in internet. Autumn is a little bit too early in Lithuania for this plant to show all its beauty. But it’s trying to do the best it can. Just love it for that.

Symphyotrichum lateriflorum ‘Lady in Black’

The single blooms of rudbeckia still gladden my soul. The end is near but while making this photo I still found some new buds. A very patient flower.

Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’

I am a little bit worried about sedums in my garden. There were too much rain and most of them don’t look nice. I hope they somehow will survive. But one sedum looks nice and lovely. I bought it in a market from a lady and she could not tell its name. But what a power for life!

Sedum

I think that is all for this month. Not much but a little bit more than I expected. Winter is coming:)  This time for sure. But you can still find sunny gardens to enjoy. Check out Carols May Dream Gardens and find out GBBD news from gardeners all over the world. Happy GBBD!
